Want to join the fight to save the rhino? At this rhino orphanage, you’ll be right in the heart of the action, with the unique opportunity to engage in both wildlife conservation and the preservation of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Gain invaluable hands-on experience as you nurture and care for orphaned or injured baby rhinos, while also monitoring the successful reintroduction of rhinos into a wildlife reserve located within a UNESCO-protected area.
Today, Africa’s rhino are being driven to extinction by poachers and, by joining this project, you’ll make a real difference to animals' health and wellbeing.
In the mornings, you may accompany staff on walks in the pristine mountan environment, learning about the unique vegetation and some bush craft. In the afternoons, you'll be immersed in the breathtaking presence of wildebeest and zebra, closely monitoring the progress of the rhinos that have been successfully released back into their natural habitat. As night falls, you might find yourself bottle-feeding a recently orphaned baby rhino, becoming an integral part of its rehabilitation journey.
Throughout your time at the rhino orphanage, you will receive one-on-one guidance and supervision from a team of knowledgeable zoologists, conservationists, and researchers. This ensures your active involvement in every aspect of rhino rehabilitation, allowing you to make a meaningful contribution to their wellbeing and conservation.
“This experience was life-changing and may have changed the course of what I want to do. I definitely want to return to Africa and work with rhinos again!”
Since 1999, our organisation has empowered gap year travellers to work hands-on with Africa’s wildlife. As experts in conservation, we’ve helped thousands of volunteers gain skills for their university applications or future careers, all while creating gap year experiences that are anything but tame.
We’ve also supported those that are simply searching for a meaningful wildlife experience instead of the usual safari holiday. We do this by offering a variety of opportunities including being able to volunteer at wildlife care and rehabilitation centres to aid orphaned and injured animals; assist with wildlife conservation management in order to monitor priority species and contribute to vital research; and being able to live the life of an African wildlife vet while meeting the requirements for Extra Mural Studies (EMS) and Animal Husbandry Extra Mural Studies (AHEMS).
Together, we can create a brighter future for Africa’s wildlife.
