There are many cats in Barcelona that do not have loving homes. It is against the law to euthanise animals in the region of Catalonia, which has resulted in a real problem with homeless and stray animals. The problem arises when owners pass away, when they can no longer afford their pets, and kittens are abandoned on on the streets. These poor creatures are taken in by shelters, but they are now bursting at the seams.
Your volunteering role
The ultimate aim is to rehome the cats. This takes a lot of work from volunteers, and you can help with this. Volunteers help out for 3 - 4 hours each morning. This involves feeding the animals, cleaning their enclosures, playing with them and helping with their basic care.
Ultimately, the aim is to rehome as many animals as possible, so animal socialisation is key. This can involve playing with the animals and lots of affection - basically, preparing them for life with their new owners. It is perfect for any animal lover who loves a cuddle!
Free time
The afternoons are free for you to fill as you please - Barcelona is an incredible city, so you will find it hard to be bored! Why not visit the beach, see the Sagrada Familia Cathedral (designed by Gaudi and under construction since 1882!) and take a stroll in the serene Park Guell. There is a great buzz at Las Ramblas, good shopping, amazing restaurants and lovely bars to explore too. An alternative tour of the city is included - led by someone who formerly lived on the streets.
