The Maasai tribe, a proud people striving to preserve their unique culture. They are probably one of the most iconic tribes in East Africa. Of Nilotic ethnic origin, they live in the northern regions of Tanzania and southern Kenya. The Maasai are known for their nomadic lifestyle (although, since the 1990s, the Tanzanian government has enacted a law requiring them to become sedentary), their colorful dress code, bead jewelry, and impressive traditions.
**Volunteer Mission for Women's Empowerment:** The Maasai tribe has its own way of life, which differs from that of other societies in Tanzania. Most women live in poverty and cultural oppression. Men are the heads of families and villages, controlling almost all aspects of life.
The main source of income for women is the sale of traditional bead jewelry. However, due to their vulnerability and lack of education, they lack the means to protect their economic interests. The goal of this project is to provide them with the tools to emancipate themselves from community authority and make financial decisions through mutually beneficial information exchange.
Most Maasai women spend their time milking, caring for animals, and doing household work. This type of work is currently the priority for women as it requires neither education nor community engagement. Changing this trend would allow women to act for sustainable development in the future.
