Environmental Protection in Seychelles

ENVIRONMENTAL VOLUNTEERING PROJECT – LAND & COASTLINE
Join a team of international volunteers and work on environmental protection projects. You will discover a rich and diverse flora and fauna. You will primarily work on the protection of sea turtles: this species is critically endangered and nests on the island. You will monitor the hatching of green turtles and Hawksbill turtles and collect a wealth of useful data (number of individuals, shell size, number of eggs, etc.). You will also assist with our research project on lemon sharks, monitoring their population and its evolution. This species is still very poorly studied. Additionally, you will be tasked with collecting data on erosion phenomena, the reproduction of Coco de Mer, salinity levels, and temperature in the mangroves, as well as bird monitoring.

LEMON SHARKS
On Curieuse Island, the mangrove is a key breeding site for the sickle-shaped lemon sharks (Negaprion acutidens). Our NGO in the Seychelles captures and then releases sharks to attach tracking tags essential for studying their activities. Currently, this species is poorly understood, and we hope to achieve a better understanding of lemon sharks.
BIRDS
Our NGO is currently conducting research on birds on Curieuse Island. We regularly carry out censuses and collect a lot of data.
COCO DE MER
The Coco de Mer is an endemic species of the Seychelles. It is found only on the islands of Praslin and Curieuse. Our teams are studying its development, in particular.
MANGROVE
Curieuse Island has the largest mangrove in the Seychelles. Our NGO conducts studies on hydrology, salinity, and the impact of tides.
HAWKSBILL TURTLES
Curieuse Island hosts the most important nesting sites for these turtles. During the nesting and hatching season, we patrol the beaches, collect data on the turtles, and tag the females.
Marine Conservation Program
In collaboration with the Seychelles National Park Services, you may also be involved in educational campaigns or various discovery activities.
