Projekt und Rolle der Freiwilligen

MARINE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION IN THE FIJI ISLANDS
The Fiji Islands consist of an archipelago of 300 tropical paradise islands in the heart of the Pacific Ocean. White sandy beaches, rows of palm trees, and unforgettable scuba diving experiences.

With over 4,000 m² of coral reefs and 1,500 marine species, marine environmental protection projects have become essential to preserving the fragile balance disrupted by tourism and commercial activities. This is why our partner organization is affiliated with the research of local communities. Among other things, they share information with the Fiji Institute of Research for Development.

All their initiatives and volunteer projects are led by experts in collaboration with the local population and government. Fiji is a leader in the field of ecotourism. Their goal is to make their marine and terrestrial environment a model of a sustainable ecosystem.
As a volunteer in Fiji, you will have the chance to contribute to sustainable development while exploring the islands, beaches, and hidden bays, experiencing unforgettable diving adventures.

TASKS FOR INTERNS IN ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECTS
Note: This mission involves a significant amount of scuba diving, so volunteers must either take a PADI course on-site or be certified to participate.

THE PRIORITIES OF THE FOLLOWING RESEARCH ARE:

Collect data on fish species.
Map coral and mangrove habitats.
Develop environmental education in local schools.
Develop best practices for marine and terrestrial environmental protection on Caqalai Island.
THE ACTIVITY PROGRAM IS:
Depending on the diving skills of the volunteers, they will be tasked with identifying invertebrates, fish, or corals.
Once trained, volunteers will learn some survival techniques to become part of the data collection team based in the “Moturiki waters.”

Depending on weather conditions, our goal is to have volunteers dive one to two times a day (5 days a week). Outside of diving, other activities will include training sessions, marine debris collection, and environmental education.
